That is so funny! I can imagine that happening to me as my cat (who looks a little like your cat in her colouring) sometimes follows me so far and greets me on the way back by popping out from under a car and miaowing.
Started my cat outside with harness for first time out....and for first couple of weeks. She didnt like it and is now happy outside patrolling her area. However, some areas it would nit be safe for them to go out, so dont criticise those who use them...at least being responsible guardians.
